Permanent residency pathways

Registered nurse Winne Lai could not be more grateful to Unting AgeWell for sponsoring her Permanent Resident Visa.

She regards Australia as home, and quite simply does not want to live anywhere else.

Her journey started in China nearly 41 years ago. She completed her schooling, obtained a Bachelor’s Degree in International Trade and Business and got a job doing market development.

Then her Uncle, who lives in Australia, returned to China for a visit and regaled Winnie with tales of a country with vast open spaces, golden sandy beaches and beautiful bushland.

She felt restless, wanted to expand her horizons – and arrived in Australia at the end of 2008. And she opted to live in Melbourne because, wait for it … she likes the weather!

Winnie has always been drawn to caring for people, so first worked as a community worker and then did her EN Division 2 Nursing followed by a Bachelor of Nursing Degree.

She joined Uniting AgeWell in 2019 in a casual nursing role at Kingsville Community. A permanent role came up at Strath-Haven Community in Bendigo in 2021, and she jumped at it. She’s been there for almost a year now and loves both the job and the regional city.

And here, in a totally different career on the other side of the world, Winnie has found her niche. Working in aged care has proved to be as rewarding as she imagined it would be.

“I love providing holistic care. In a hospital setting once people are well, they’re discharged. Here I get to know them and get to hear all their wonderful stories,” explains Winnie.

She also enjoys the close rapport she shares with their family members. “It’s lovely to have that wider rapport, not just with the residents but their loved ones,” Winnie says.

She also loves the friendly staff who hail from all corners of the world. Winnie fits right in!

Uniting AgeWell Strath-Haven Community Residential Services Manager Kate Jackson is delighted to be able to help Winnie.

“She’s a great nurse and is an absolute asset to the team,” Kate says.Do you know someone who would be interested in a similar opportunity?
