Stay healthy, eat well and be a mentor

Lifestyle guru Tonia Todman says the keys to ageing well are to eat well, exercise, remain mentally stimulated – but most of all be a great mentor to younger generations forging their own paths.

The author of 28 books on cooking, craft, home decorating and DIY was the keynote speaker at a special event at Uniting AgeWell’s Amarco Apartments in Kingsville on June 16.

Tonia shared her life story with guests, including the drought that drove her family off the farm and back to the city, which ultimately lead her to a long and successful career in media.

“If you are given an opportunity in life, you take it,” she told guests at the retirement living complex in Melbourne’s west.

Tonia is best remembered for her roles on hit shows Healthy, Wealthy and Wise, Good Morning Australia and Creative Living with Tonia Todman.

Tonia now imparts her vast knowledge and experience with classes on cooking, interior design and gardening at her blue stone cottage Highbank in Kyneton, where she also offers accommodation and grows acres of roses for wholesale.

One lucky guest at the Amarco Apartments event won a night’s accommodation at Highbank.

Tonia described being a senior as the “indulgent stage of life”.  Given people are now living longer, she said it was important everyone remained healthy.

“You are never too old to learn, to start a new career or begin a new project.  Follow and do what you are passionate about; it will lead you to a full and rewarding life,” she said.  Tonia also encouraged seniors to pass on their skills to the younger generations.

Amarco Apartments Sales and Marketing Coordinator Anita Ukalovic said this reflected Uniting AgeWell’s approach to ageing well – supporting people to remain independent, connected to their community and living with choice and peace of mind.

“Moving to retirement living doesn’t mean giving up the things you love,” she said.

“In fact, at Amarco Apartments it means people have more time to do what they enjoy most and really celebrate life.”

Anita said the Tonia Todman event was part of a regular series of public events at the vibrant complex, including informative morning teas with interest groups and visits from celebrities.
