On International Nurses Day, we’d like to thank all of our nurses working in the community and in our aged care facilities across both Tasmania and Victoria for their dedication and commitment.
The day is always celebrated on the birthday of the founder of modern nursing, Florence Nightingale. It’s an opportunity to pause, reflect and celebrate the contribution nurses make across our communities.

Novie Taguicana
The opportunities at Uniting AgeWell are enormous. Just ask Novie Taguicana.
She joined the organisation three years ago as a Food Services Assistant at Preston Community and after a few months thought, “this is great, but I need to be challenged more.” So she studied while working and became a Personal Care Worker at Hawthorn Community. Once again she realised she needed to reach her full potential, now she's an Enrolled Nurse due to start studying a Bachelor of Nursing part-time through RMIT while continuing to work at the facility.

Savitha Thommana
Savitha Thommana has nursed in India and Rome but has found her niche as a Registered Nurse at Uniting AgeWell Queenborough Rise Community in beautiful Hobart.
Savitha has been at the residential community for three years now and counts herself lucky to be in such a supportive environment. However her colleagues and residents know they’re the lucky ones to have her.
“I find it very rewarding caring for the residents and also partnering in care with their families and with the doctors. It is wonderful to be part of the whole-of-person support team,” says Savitha.

Sharon Paull
Sharon Paull is made of tough stuff. But recently the Community Endorsed Enrolled Nurse found herself welling up when she saw the look of pure joy on a client’s face as he left the confines of his wheelchair and enjoyed the freedom of unfettered movement in a heated public pool.
“It was like an ‘aww wow’ moment for me,” says Sharon, who works at Uniting AgeWell’s Hume Community Programs. “There was Kevin, laughing and grinning and thoroughly enjoying himself holding onto the side of the pool and doing lengths, with the Home Care Worker at hand. It was a deeply moving feeling knowing that I had helped make a difference to his life.”
Nabina Prajapati
In three short years at Uniting AgeWell Queenborough Rise, Nabina Prajapati has gone from a “nervous” new nursing graduate to an extremely confident RN whose career progressing steadily.
“I’m proud of where I am today,” says Nabina, “and I’m grateful to Uniting AgeWell for helping me grow into the role every step of the way.”
Nabina has learned first-hand that when opportunity knocks, you embrace it. Especially when you’ve recently migrated and are trying to establish yourself in your new homeland.
Daisy's Uniting AgeWell care journey
Fifteen years ago, Daisy Zhou, started out as a young personal care worker at Box Hill Community. Now she is the Residential Services Manager and leads a team of more than 100 staff.
A conscientious, hard worker, Daisy is committed to providing the best care possible for all residents.
She attributes her stellar rise to the unwavering support of Uniting AgeWell, a sentiment that underpins her own support and motivation for the success of each member of her own team.
I've been supported, championed and empowered to get where I am. And in turn I'm unwavering in enabling staff to achieve all that they can.
