Support group to bring carers together
Tuesday, 13 March
A new support group promises to reduce stress levels and allow carers of people with dementia to forge strong connections with Bendigo locals with similar roles.
Uniting AgeWell’s You're Not Alone - Carer Support Group is the first of its kind for the Loddon Mallee, which is home to more than 6,000 people living with dementia.
Kerry Egan, Uniting AgeWell Loddon Mallee South Program Coordinator, said the initiative had generated a lot of interest from local residents and healthcare providers.
“Caring for someone living with dementia can be very isolating, so this social platform will fulfil a great need in the community,” she said.
“We’ve spoke to local GPs and nurses, as well as organisations like Bendigo Carers Support Services and Dementia Australia, and they have all been really supportive.
“We were also really pleased to be awarded a $10,000 State Trustees Australia Foundation grant, which will help us get the group up and running.”
The You're Not Alone - Carer Support Group will meet monthly for two hours at a time, allowing carers to share their stories, hear from guest speakers, and have a break from their caring role.
Carers will receive information about services available to them and the person with dementia, addressing key issues such as financial planning, elder abuse, My Aged Care, wellbeing strategies and respite services.
“Carer burden or stress is often the reason for hospitalisation or premature admission to residential care, therefore extra support for carers is paramount,” Kerry said.
“This group will provide carers with the supports, practical strategies and networks they need to maintain their emotional health and wellbeing while continuing their care role.”
Uniting AgeWell can provide appropriate respite for people living with dementia, while their carer attends the group meetings.
