Artists in residence

Artists from Uniting AgeWell Camberwell Community, Condare Court and Uniting AgeWell Preston Community, spent the first months of 2024, producing art for a special event.

An art exhibition on May 25, held at Uniting AgeWell Preston Community, showcased artwork for sale, with pieces reflecting a range of styles and applications. The show featured everything from landscapes to still life and portraits, with residents drawing inspiration from an eclectic mix of life experience and appreciation for the things that appeal to them in their daily life.

The community hosted family, friends, residents and management from both sites in what was a resounding success. It was also great to see members of the Social Connections group attending.

Director Lifestyle Services, Sharon Levey says the residents were driven by a sense of community. “Working towards an art exhibition gave residents a sense of purpose and pride as they were determined to not only produce great artwork but contribute to a special cause.”

A decision to raise money, was a key driver for the artists, who wanted to give back to the broader community. In all they raised $1,400. A joint decision is for the money to go to the Fred Hollows Foundation.

Sharon says the reason they chose the foundation was very much because their work gives sight back to people who are vision impaired.

“It was agreed that the link between vision and art being a very visual medium, was meaningful and the Fred Hollows Foundation is the perfect beneficiary for the money raised.”

The Fred Hollows Foundation work closely with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples to assist community members who experience vision impairment and benefit from ground breaking surgery. The donation will be used for this work.

The fruits of their work in the form of a cheque will be presented to a member of the Fred Hollows Foundation at Uniting AgeWell Camberwell Community, Condare Court on 11 July 2024.
