Community gathers at Hawthorn Men’s Shed Open Day

Community gathers at Hawthorn Men’s Shed Open Day

Despite the cold, wind and the threat of rain, community members and local dignitaries filled Uniting AgeWell Hawthorn Centre Men’s Shed Open Day on Friday, June 10.

The interactive open day saw close to 50 interested community members checking out woodwork masterpieces and watching woodturning demonstrations by carpentry experts.

Guests also had the opportunity to speak to staff and activity organisers and tour the Hawthorn Centre, while enjoying a sausage sizzle.

Local MPs John Pesutto, Member for Hawthorn and Josh Frydenberg, Federal Member for Kooyong and the Minister for Resources, Energy and Northern Australia also attended the Open Day, happily chatting with guests.

The Hawthorn Centre Men’s Shed has undergone a major redevelopment in the past year and now boasts a larger shed with a huge range of state-of-the-art equipment.

Hawthorn Centre Manager Integrated Services Helen Page said the Men’s Shed officially opened last August, after receiving a significant contribution from the Victorian Government and support from the Glenferrie Rotary Club.

“It’s part of the Hawthorn Centre, which offers a range of community services to assist older people to remain active, socially connected and living independently,” she said.

“We were thrilled to see so many interested people attend the Open Day.  They were very interested in what we had to offer and many signed up to participate in weekly programs.”

The Hawthorn Men’s Shed is located at 93-95 Elgin Street, Hawthorn.
