Gary Major says Uniting AgeWell has given him his life back and he looks forward to the day he can start work again.
The 53-year-old and his family, including his 79-year-old mother, Dorothy, moved from NSW down to the northern part of Tasmania a few months ago, and he says they cannot believe how well they are being supported by the Uniting AgeWell Home Care Team.
Gary was at the top of his game in the transport and security industries in NSW but stopped work to look after his Mum. He says over the years Dorothy had tried various home care providers without achieving a reliable schedule.
“I would get phone calls from Mum every second or so day at work, asking me to pop over and take her to the doctor or help around the house,” Gary says. “My wife was working a full day and there was no one else to help out!”
He says things became so difficult he felt obliged to give up work and do what needed to be done for his mum.
Gary, his wife Lisa and his Mum have since moved to Northdown, near Port Sorell, 12 minutes’ drive from Devonport, where they are all living together in this beautiful corner of the world, and couldn’t be happier.
When Uniting AgeWell invited Gary to fill in a customer feedback report recently, he phoned up instead and said he couldn’t praise the organisation enough.
“Nothing is too much trouble for them,” he says. “And their constant communication with us is just wonderful. We feel totally supported by them, it’s wonderful to be able to relax and know that Mum is in good hands.”
Ann Bingham, Program Manager, Home Care Programs Tasmania says it is heart-warming to receive this feedback.
“Our team is very dedicated, we all work very hard and always ensure that we put the client front and centre in all that we do,” says Ann. “It is wonderful to hear we are making a difference to the lives of older people.”
