Mr Fix-It finds the perfect career fit

Meet Mr Fix-it – Uniting AgeWell’s Maintenance Officer Joseph Cedeno who makes sure that everything runs smoothly at both Kingsville Community and Amarco Apartments in Melbourne’s west.

And now Joseph has found the perfect fix to accommodate both his passions – being back in facility maintenance and working with older people.

He started at Uniting AgeWell towards the end of last year and describes the job as “a blessing.”

“Unfortunately both my parents are deceased, and it’s lovely for me to be able to interact with the older people I meet each day whilst working. Growing up we are taught to respect our elders and to listen to their wisdom – and this certainly gives me the opportunity to do that on the daily basis,” Joseph says.

His role is busy – not only does he complete routine maintenance, but oversees contractors called to the sites and signs off on their completed work.

Joseph, 39, graduated with a Bachelor of Science in Engineering in the Philippines and worked as facility maintenance head at a beverage manufacturing company for several years before moving to Australia in 2011.

He is married and has three boys, aged 13, 11 and 10, and moved to Melbourne for more work opportunities and a better way of life.

For the last nine years he has held a number of roles, including working in quality assurance in the building industry and in maintenance.

“I’m proud to work in aged care,” Joseph says. “Uniting AgeWell is a great company, I feel supported by UA management and encouraged to be the best that I can.”

In his spare time he enjoys playing basketball with his mates.
